Someone once said 'tread softly and carry a big stick' - this was a misheard version of Teddy Roosevelt's 'Speak softly and carry a big stick' which originally came from a West African proverb.
I have sort of word mangled it into 'Speak softly and carry a big stick - but bring a BIG dog for protection!'
